In our latest Alumni Spotlight, we catch up with Jessica, a student who wowed us with her work ethic, focus, and determination. Indeed, having given birth during the course, she returned to school just two weeks later, ensuring she would graduate, on time, with the rest of her class. WOW! Here’s her story . .
Jessica, How did you become interested in the beauty industry?
I was drawn to the transformations that people were able to do through hair. I began to watch YouTube videos by master stylists and educators and it was something I would never get bored watching. I began doing my own hair and my family’s; the more I would experiment, the more I knew that it was something I wanted to do the rest of my life!
Why did you choose ARROJO Cosmetology School?
I found ARROJO to be my best option in NYC.
Is there anything that stands out in your mind about your experience here?
The people I met! Class 69 is the most talented group of people I’ve ever met. I love how close we got and cared about each other, I was able to be myself and learn so much. I was also pregnant and had my baby while in school (not literally!), and I got the most amazing surprise baby shower. I never felt so much love. The instructors definitely left a mark in my life, teaching me to be better everyday.
What is your favorite new skill?
Currently I’m learning new foiling patterns and balayage, I’m also loving learning how to cut curly girls curl by curl!
Any advice you can share with current or prospective students?
This is only the beginning of your journey, even if you don’t think you’ve grown, you definitely have! Think about your first day to your last. Everyone has different paths that they’re going to take, you don’t have to be in a salon. Believe in yourself, allow yourself to make mistakes. The best time to make them is now!
What did you do after graduation, and where are you working now?
After graduation I was at a salon for a while, then I left to try freelance. Soon after, however I found the most amazing home –– Fringe Salon on Broome Street. It definitely feels like the right fit for me! Everyone is so interested in teaching and are so talented!
