The Different Ways You Can Use Your Cosmetology Degree

Are you in the midst of a career you find unsatisfying? Do
you want to launch a career that allows you to flex your creative muscles and
meet new people on a regular basis? If so, you may want to get a cosmetology
degree.

The cosmetology industry isn’t “just” a field that enables
people to be creative. It’s also an industry that’s growing. According to the
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs in this industry will increase by 13 percent
between 2016
and 2026, with more than 87,500 jobs being added to payrolls throughout the
nation during that time.

Opportunities in the
Cosmetology Industry

There are many kinds of jobs that you can pursue once you’ve
earned your cosmetology degree and passed the state exam. You can be a
hairstylist, manicurist, esthetician or electrologist, for example. While those
positions are rewarding in their own right, there are others that are a little
farther off the beaten path, so to speak.

Fashion Show Stylist

If you enjoy working with others to bring a creative vision
to life, you’ll probably enjoy working as a fashion show stylist. Fashion
enthusiasts around the world turn their attention to runways to get inspiration
for hairstyles and makeup that work with outfits of all sorts. To succeed in
this role, you normally have to be highly artistic, wildly creative and a team
player.

Advertising Stylist

In general, advertising stylists start out being represented
by an agency before they strike out on their own. Advertising stylists are
often charged with creating a wide variety of looks for print, television and
digital ads that can range from the girl next door to futuristic and beyond.

Platform Artist

There’s no reason to sit on the sidelines as a cosmetologist
when you can take center stage as a platform artist. Platform artists show off
their craft on stage during trade shows and other industry events. They
typically demonstrate products and various styling techniques on live models as
others watch them. To thrive in this position, you must be well-spoken, a
master of your trade and comfortable being the center of attention.

Celebrity Stylist

Being a celebrity stylist is one of the most demanding
positions a cosmetologist can have. This position isn’t just about making your
clients look great. It’s also about making sure your clients are happy, which
isn’t always easy to do no matter how stunning you make a given celebrity look.
Celebrity stylists work with A-list movie stars, fashion models, stage
performers, local weathermen and women and everyone in between.

Entrepreneurship

As a licensed cosmetologist, you may have the opportunity to
become your own boss by opening a salon. In addition to offering your own
services to clients, you can rent space to other cosmetologists who will work
as contractors. Another option is to hire part-time or full-time qualified
employees. Once your salon is established and you have a steady clientele base,
you may want to hire a manager to streamline operations and efficiency. If
demand for services continue to grow, you could expand by opening multiple
salon locations within your city or in multiple cities.
